Town (Roman Period, Late Antique Perod, Islamic Period)
Site description:

The fortress town of Belbeis is located on the eastern edge of the southern Nile Delta, the date of the founding of the fortress remains debated. Structural similarities to the Hyksos-fortresses like Tell el-Yahudiya and Shaghanbeh might suggest a late Middle Kingdom or the 2nd Intermediate Period foundation. Architectural elements inscribed with the names of Ramesses II and Merenptah were discovered, but like many Delta sites these were likely brought from elsewhere.
